Daystar XP: Epic

Ecuador: Filled with active volcanoes, the Amazon rainforest, Andes mountains, and the Galapagos islands – students explored many of the rich natural and cultural wonders of this unique nation. The theme of the year was “EPIC” which emphasised the deep exploration of adventure, old myths and legends. A few experiences this group did was traveling to Quito in the heart of Ecuador and visiting historical places such as “Church of the Society of Jesus” and “Basílica del Voto Nacional.” Everyone was welcomed by the kind people and culture, some of whom hopped on a bus with the group and shared their traditional songs, clothing and textiles. Other shared highlights were meeting the wonderful host of the ecolodge and connecting with her son and daughter. The space was not only for resting but also for coming together and sharing meals.  

Greece:  Our XP students stepped into the ancient city of Athens, Greece. We dove headfirst into an enchanting blend of ancient sculptures and buildings with vibrant street art. The first day arriving in Athens, Greece, students assisted in a ministry food drive by boxing food, serving refugees, and playing with their children. Students felt truly immersed in the community.  Monasteries of Meteora offered a breathtaking adventure, where after climbing centuries-old stone steps, our students encountered beautiful views with Monks and Nuns. Athens’ vibrant street food scene, centered on souvlaki and gyros, and overall every student agreed that this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

New Orleans: This trip exceeded expectations by offering a treasure trove of cultural discovery: food, people, art, history, legends, and more. The group enjoyed such varied experiences as a jazz boat cruise, a specialized tour focusing on the history of storytelling in the city, and a Creole cooking class that no one will ever forget. Their last night was a unique, light-up bicycle tour of the city. New Orleans showed students that some of the most interesting and unique places exist in our own country and that discovering the myths, legends, and lore around every corner can continue to surprise and delight.

Toronto: This year’s traditional trip for 9th graders being introduced to International travel included several incredible opportunities as related to this year’s Epic theme. First, they were treated to a presentation of one of Shakespeare’s First Folios and a demonstration of brand new, cutting-edge technology being used in the theater world. Our second theater focused day in Stratford provided both an outstanding performance of “The Tempest” and an intimate acting workshop with a famous actress from the Canadian stage. This trip always includes a stunning trip to Niagara Falls, and of course the beautiful sights and exhilarating boat ride thrilled us all.

All in all, the year was defined and enriched by the theme which allowed us to examine the stories we tell, and no doubt the students will continue to tell these stories for the rest of their lives.
